February 14th is St. Trifon’s Day and in Bulgaria is celebtaed as Trifon Zarezan or Vine grower day. The holiday has pagan origins as a celebration of Dionisius. With the Christianization of the Bulgarian lands became also a Christian feast. Traditionally fresh bread is baked and a chicken is cooked and usually people go to the vineyards. The trimming is succede by a further actual celebration in the local pub or pensioners or cultural club. Besides winegrowers, on February 14 celebrate and tavern-keepers and gardeners. It is also a celebration of archaeologists, as well as the Assumption of St. Cyril. In recent years, the same date is celebrated as Valentine’s Day.
