A contest to choose Japan’s best goldfish has been held in the central prefecture of Aichi.
An organization of goldfish breeders in Yatomi City holds the competition every year.
180 producers and fans exhibited a total of 762 goldfish at the 25th event on Sunday.
More than 20 varieties, including Ryukin and Shubunkin, were on display. Ryukin has a characteristic fantail and Shubunkin has a long tail fin and mosaic-like scales.
Judges evaluated the color, luster and shape of the fish. They also checked the elegance and dynamism of their movements.
A goldfish breeder from western Japan said the level of the competition rises each year. He added that he hopes some of his fish will win prizes
